This Web site is simply a demonstration of a personalized URL (PURL) system developed with Django. PURLs are an up and coming marketing tactic used in direct mail and e-mail campaigns. A consumer will receive a piece of mail or e-mail personalized toward them. It will have thier name in the copy, possible pictures geared towards personality and a PURL. This makes many people feel a personal connection to the marketing and may prompt them to take further action.

Most PURLs Web sites generally have the same flow. There is a greeting page with their personal information on it. If you sent them a direct mail, most of this will already be filled in. The next step is some sort of survey to target them further. Then finally it is some type of offer and reward for their visit to the site. The offer and reward page may be personalized depending on their answers to the survey. Meanwhile, all of this information is constantly tracked. From each unique page visit, survey questions and every other action taken on the site. As mentioned, you already have their name and mailing information, so you can easily pair that up with their visit trends.

PURLs are a viable source of marketing in just about every industry. A few examples are home builders, car dealerships, hotels, major department stores, sports teams and many others. Companies who have developed PURL systems typically charge $5,000 - $10,000 per year, plus .03-.06 cents per PURL created. These systems are created for marketers to subscribe to and in turn charge their clients a fee. Most of them have an easy to use WYSIWYG interface to make the PURL template setup easy.

This PURL system will be open sourced shortly and anyone that knows Django will be able to create them for their clients. While it is not as advanced as the above mentioned competitors, it gets the job done and is free to Django developers. Look for it soon under the name of django-purl.
